Chapter Twenty-Seven
The front door slammed shut behind Georgina and she grabbed the newel post of the staircase, taking deep breaths, willing her heart to slow down.
Sheâd made an exhibition of herself in the shop, Georgina knew, but the news the shop assistant had told her had come as such a shock. A woman had been strangled in Craynebrook. Again.
âGrandma?â
Startled, Georgina gasped and looked up. Dominic was standing at the top of the stairs, looking down at her with concern.
âWhatâs wrong? Are you ill?â He hurried down the stairs and grabbed hold of her arm. âShould I call the doctor?â
âIâm fine, Dom,â she said. âI just had a bit of a turn, thatâs all. I need to sit down.â
Dominic helped her into the chair beside the telephone table. âYou look terrible, Grandma. I really do think a doctor should take a look at you.â
âNo,â she said, smiling and patting his hand. âIâll be all right in a minute. I just heard some news that rather shocked me.â
âWhat news?â
âA woman died.â
âSomeone you knew?â
âIt doesnât matter. Iâm better now.â She took a deep breath and noticed his clothes. âYou look very smart. Are you going out?â
âJust out with Daniel,â Dominic said, buttoning up his cuffs. âBut if youâre not feeling all that, Iâll stay with you.â
âNonsense. Of course, you must go out with your friend. Lucyâs here if I need anything.â
âYouâre sure?â
âYes, Dom,â she smiled again, touched by his solicitude. He did care about her, after all. âGo.â
He kissed her cheek and left. Georgina stared at the front door for a long time, trying to work out what, if anything, she should do. She picked up the telephone receiver and asked the operator to connect her.
When the connection was made, Georgina said, âDr Avery, please.â
